"Sechín Alto, a journey to the heart of a monumental civilization."
Sechín Alto is a true feat of engineering and design dating from the Formative Period. Considered the largest ceremonial complex in ancient America, its colossal scale extends over an area of more than 100 hectares. The site is organized along a north-south axis and its symmetrical design demonstrates rigorous planning. It is estimated that the construction required millions of tons of stone and earth, mobilizing a considerable workforce.
Simply viewing the scale of the site is enough to give an idea of its past importance and the power of the civilization that built it.
Sechín Alto is of capital importance for understanding the Formative Period on the Peruvian coast. Dating from around 1800 BC, it functioned as the main political and religious center of the Sechín civilization. Unlike its smaller neighbor, Cerro Sechín, which was a specialized ceremonial center, Sechín Alto was the heart of power, where decisions were made and the most important rituals took place.
Visiting Sechín Alto is an impressive experience, but one that requires a bit more preparation than other more developed sites.
Don't forget to bring water, sunscreen, a hat, and sturdy walking shoes, as the site is outdoors and few shaded areas are available.
