The hidden gem of the Southern Valley of Cusco
Located at about 3,560 meters above sea level in the Southern Valley of Cusco, the Tipon archaeological site is a masterpiece of Inca engineering, much less known than other sites in the Sacred Valley. It is considered a premier agricultural complex and a sanctuary for water worship, with its perfectly preserved Inca terraces and its still-functional irrigation system.
This fascinating site was probably a royal residence or an agricultural experimentation center. The site impresses with its ability to channel water from a natural spring to feed its ceremonial fountains and multiple terraces, demonstrating exceptional technological mastery.
Access to Tipon from Cusco
The site is easily accessible in less than an hour from Cusco. It is one of the highlights of the Southern Valley tourist circuit.
Bus or collectivo transport to Tipon
Go to "Plaza San Sebastián" in Cusco and take a bus or collectivo towards Urcos. Ask the driver to drop you off at the Tipon site entrance. The trip costs between 2 and 4 soles per person.
Private taxi to Tipon
You can also rent a taxi for a half-day or full day. The price can range from 80 to 150 soles depending on the duration and other stops you wish to make.
Once at the entrance, a short taxi ride is needed to go up to the main site. The site is visited on foot and does not require a long hike.

Access to Tipon is not included in a single ticket. To visit this site, you must purchase the Cusco Tourist Ticket.
Tourist Ticket (Circuit I) for Tipon
- This ticket includes Tipon as well as other sites like Piquillacta. The price is 70 soles per person.
- Visit duration: Allow about 1h30 to 2 hours to explore Tipon.
- Tips: As the site is at high altitude, it is recommended to acclimatize in Cusco before the visit. Bring water, sunscreen, and a hat.
