The Humboldt Current creates unique conditions: powerful and consistent waves. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced surfer, Peru offers world-class spots.
Altitude: All spots are at sea level (0 m). No altitude issues.
Water temperature: 15°C to 22°C depending on season and area. Wetsuit recommended: 3/2 mm in the north (Máncora), 4/3 mm in the center (Lima) and south.
Currents and rip tides: The Humboldt Current can create strong currents. Ask locals for advice before entering the water.
December to April (summer) – Warmer sea (18-22°C), consistent waves, less fog. Ideal for all levels.
May to November (winter) – Colder water (15-18°C), but bigger and more powerful waves, especially at Chicama. Reserved for experienced surfers.
Indicative prices (2026): Board rental: €10-15/day; Private lesson: €30-50/hour; 5-day course: €120-200. Prices vary by season and spot.
Take out travel insurance covering water sports (medical expenses, repatriation). Check the coverage before you leave. At sea, respect swimming flags and never overestimate your ability.
Use biodegradable sunscreen to protect marine ecosystems. Do not leave any waste on beaches. Respect bird nesting areas (Islas Ballestas, etc.).
No specific permit required for surfing. For minors, parental authorization may be required by schools. Check local municipal regulations (some beaches ban surfing at certain times).
Most spots are accessible by bus from Lima. For Máncora, allow 15 hours by bus or a flight to Talara. Choose accommodation close to the beach to take advantage of the best conditions early in the morning.
