The Río Abiseo National Park (PNRA), created on August 11, 1983 by Supreme Decree No. 064-83-AG, is a protected area of 274,520 hectares located in the Mariscal Cáceres province, San Martín department. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990 (cultural) and then in 1992 (mixed natural and cultural), it shares this unique distinction in Peru with the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu.
The park's main mission is to protect the cloud forests of the "ceja de selva" and the high forest, while conserving endangered wildlife species. It also aims to protect the archaeological complexes of Gran Pajatén and Los Pinchudos and to maintain the ecological balance of the Abiseo, Túmac and Montecristo river basins.
The Lagothrix flavicauda, endemic to Peru, is one of the rarest species in the world. Discovered in 1812 and then considered extinct for a century, its rediscovery in the park was a scientific sensation. This 5-8 kg primate, recognizable by its distinctive yellow tail, lives exclusively in cloud forests between 1,700 and 2,700 meters above sea level. Critically endangered, its protection is an absolute priority.
The park is home to more than 144 archaeological sites from the Chachapoyas culture, including the famous complexes of Gran Pajatén and Los Pinchudos. These exceptional remains testify to sophisticated pre-Columbian occupation in this remote environment.
A joint expedition revealed new structures associated with Gran Pajatén, including a residential area and ceremonial remains, shedding light on the urban complexity of the Chachapoyas.
Humid tropical climate with average temperature above 18°C and rainfall exceeding 750 mm. The dry season (May to October) is ideal for visits, with more stable conditions and better visibility for wildlife observation and hiking.
Local travel agencies generally offer two types of experiences to discover the park according to your availability and preferences.
