Llanganuco Lake, located in Huascarán National Park (Áncash), is one of Peru's natural wonders. Composed of the Chinancocha and Orconcocha lagoons, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is famous for its intense turquoise waters, framed by the snow giants of the Cordillera Blanca like Huascarán (6,768 m) and Huandoy (6,160 m).
At 3,850 meters above sea level and about 25 km from Yungay, it's a prime destination for nature lovers, photography, and high-altitude hiking.
Main characteristics: It is the largest and most visited of the two. Its characteristic green-turquoise color is due to glacial sediments (rock flour).
Main activity: Paseos en bote (boat rides) managed by the "Unidos Venceremos" Community of Huashao.
Main characteristics: Smaller, higher, and often of a deeper sky blue. Its atmosphere is wilder.
According to local legend, the lagoons were born from the tears of two lovers, a princess and a soldier, whom the gods transformed into the Huascarán and Huandoy mountains to separate them forever. Their tears would have filled the valley, creating these two inseparable bodies of water.
The water comes from the melting glaciers of the surrounding peaks. The area is home to fragile Andean flora such as groves of queñual (Polylepis) and species like Macha Macha. Typical high-altitude birds such as the Pato Sutro (Torrent Duck) or the Gaviota Andina (Andean Gull) can be observed here.
Main starting point: Huaraz (about 84 km / 2h30 to 3h drive). The road passes through the Portachuelo Pass (4,767 m) offering panoramic views.
