The Laguna de los Cóndores, also known as the "Laguna de las Momias", is one of Peru's most fascinating archaeological sites. Nestled at 2,600 meters altitude in the Amazonas region, this dark-water lagoon stretches 3 km long and 1 km wide, surrounded by a preserved cloud forest setting.
This exceptional site owes its fame to the discovery of over 200 mummies and countless funerary artifacts from the ancient Chachapoyas, preserved in mausoleums perched on cliffs overlooking the lagoon.
The Laguna de los Cóndores was rediscovered in 1996 by local farmers, but it was in 1997 that archaeologists began systematic excavations. What was found revolutionized our understanding of the Chachapoyas civilization.

The Laguna de los Cóndores (also called Laguna de las Momias) is located near the town of Leymebamba, 93 km from Chachapoyas.
The site has revealed more than 200 mummies, 31 quipus and hundreds of artifacts (crafts, musical instruments, ceramics, textiles) in exceptional state of preservation. All these treasures are now exhibited at the Leymebamba Museum, located 15 minutes from Leymebamba.
