Glacial wonder at 4,200 meters above sea level
Lake Humantay is a glacial lagoon with turquoise waters, nestled at the foot of the majestic Humantay glacier. Located at 4,200 meters above sea level, this site has become one of the most popular day trips from Cusco. The hike offers breathtaking views of the Andean landscapes, culminating in the discovery of this spectacular lake.
Lake Humantay is often the first stop on the famous Salkantay trek, but its beauty is such that it deserves a dedicated excursion for those who don't have time to do the full trek.
How to reach Lake Humantay from Cusco
The journey begins early in the morning from Cusco, heading towards the village of Mollepata (about 2 hours by road). After a breakfast break, the trip continues to the village of Soraypampa, which is the starting point of the hike.
Hike from Soraypampa to the lake
From Soraypampa, the hike takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the lake, with a fairly steep climb on a well-marked trail. The path is demanding due to the slope and altitude, but the view at the end is a magnificent reward.
Difficulty level of the Lake Humantay hike
The hike to Lake Humantay is considered moderate to difficult. Although the distance is not very long, the trail's incline and high altitude (4,200 m) make it strenuous for those not acclimatized. Good physical fitness and prior acclimatization of 2 to 3 days in Cusco are highly recommended.
Equipment and tips for the hike
- Clothing: Layers of warm clothing, windbreaker, and waterproof jacket.
- Footwear: Sturdy and comfortable hiking shoes.
- Other: Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, water, and energy snacks.

Important information about Lake Humantay
The lake is located at the foot of Mount Humantay, a peak that is part of the Salkantay massif, considered an "Apu" or sacred mountain in Inca cosmology. The turquoise color of the lake is due to the presence of glacial minerals that dissolve in the water.
Access to the lake is subject to a fee, 20 Soles for foreign tourists and 10 Soles for nationals, and it is highly recommended to go through a travel agency for transport organization and logistics, as well as for safety reasons.
